Selling Your Geckos In A Saturated Market
If you want to breed your geckos then you will have to sell them. Selling them can sometimes be easier said than done. Especially when the gargoyle gecko market has seen such a huge increase of breeders over the last few years. So the question is how do you stand out among hundreds of others?
Well I remember back in 2020, gargoyle geckos listed on MorphMarket had just surpassed 400 for the first time. Today there are over 1,000. Less than 10% of them are listed for over $1,000. Now IF these animals are truly worth their price tag, this means that there is a lack of high quality geckos. So one of the things you can do to eliminate how many people you have to compete with is to do your best to produce high quality animals. This requires doing things with a purpose. Plan with a purpose. Purchase with a purpose. Pair with a purpose.
The other big thing to do in order to elevate above others is to get rid of the hobby mindset. Now there is nothing wrong with this being a hobby because probably 99% of people are doing it that way. But when you use that mindset of things being a hobby, you can give away some responsibility because it isn’t a job to you. By taking on a business mindset, you then take on more responsibility for the transactional side of things. Treat others the way you would want to be treated if you were going to buy a product from any of your favorite brands.
Also innovate! There is a lack of innovation in the reptile world. Figure out a way to do things differently. If you are listing a gecko for under $1,000 then you are competing with 900+ others. Ask yourself why should they buy that animal from you and not anyone else? Find a way to be different. It is just like comparing 2 products. Let’s just say you were buying a jacket. One is $100 and the other is $150. However the $150 one has a lifetime warranty, great customer service, and you have 6 months to return it. The $100 dollar one has no warranty, 30 day return period, and takes a week to get a reply from. This is just a made up example but as you can see, value matters. Innovate and figure out how you provide more value.
Hope this helps! - Jake
